asparagus questions...

thinking about buying some crowns/seed. I have a raised bed which will hopefully have a little bit of space left after I plant out everything thats currently in the greenhouse.....can I use this space for the asparagus or is it best to maybe put them in a large container so they are totally seperate without risk of getting disturbed by harvesting other crops?

Also do the plants/bed need covering over winter to protect from frost?

Asparagus have both deep and shallow roots, so I strongly recommend you not intercrop anything with asparagus. They also need to be set somewhere that isn't inconvenient for you to turn over your garden eg if you rotovate. Containers won't work for asparagus as they're thirsty things and would dry out faster than you'd remember to water them, not to mention the massive rootball they form when fully mature. They also like a slightly sweeter (alkaline soil) so would need a bit of lime each year. Give them their own spot, undisturbed and they'll return the favour with good yields.

I've just been given one, and I'm totally lost as to where to put it. :?
I have some raised beds down the lottie, and I suppose I could divide off an area of say 2' x 4'. but i may forget to water it??? how about amongst the rasberries in me garden? - do they need full sun?

Raspberries prefer full sun but will live in part sun just as easily. You might get slightly less crop but not enough to justify not putting it where space is left. I wouldn't put the raspberries in the tub as they'd definitely suffer, but the asparagus could do well there.

My one asparagus spear :o is in a large pot 18"x18", The asparagus in the ground hasn't done a thing this year.
