Stupid question re garlic
« on: March 25, 2008, 19:10 »
My Mum has been given some garlic to plant.

I know they should have been planted ages ago but she is going to put them in anyway and see what happens!

This is the stupid question.... At the moment they look like a complete garlic bulb with a small green shoot at the top. Does she have to break it up and plant all the cloves separately?

Sorry if this is a really stupid question!!

Break the bulb up and plant the individual cloves.

As above, you may find they dont split and just end up with big cloves depending on type, dont worry, hang them to dry and replant in the autumn, next years will be big bulbs    I do this every year with a bulb.

It's certainly not too late to plant either.

I only ever plant mine in late March and always get a good crop.

I know that garlic does require a period of cold weather for the optimum crop, but here in Yorkshire it doesn't warm up till May anyhow so late March is plenty early enough to give 'em some cold weather.
