Stoked - two half plots to choose from
« on: March 06, 2008, 08:35 »
Well the local parish came back to me saying that in fact there are two half plots available near my house and the rent is £8 per year.

I'm off out to check them out this morning.

Do I take both on? Or is that being selfish?
Good beer, good BBQ and good friends.

Congratulations. Perhaps have a look at them first. How many are on the waiting list? Imagine how you would feel if you were waiting and someone came along and took two. If little or no waiting list be greedy.

Well I only emailed them on Monday asking if they had any spare plots.
From three local allotments this is all the available space, so no waiting lists it seems but if I take both, then nothing left for anyone else.

Hmmmmm

depends how big half is... half on our site is 37mx7m and that is plenty big for me, but was tempted to get the plot next door to me as it is unused, but I don't have the time for anymore :)

:D If you can utilise both then go for it.  I have a half plot and I've tried to get another half for years without success.  If you will leave it until next year before you can clear it and plant it up then get the best one and ask if your name can be kept on top of the list for another half next year.

Think sad said it, take the half first and get it cleared and growing, they take up quite a bit of time, loads in the summer when the weeds start, then either try and get another or try for a full plot when become available.

If you think you can manage both halves go for it.  You wanted a full size plot originally.  You'd take the single full size plot if they were together wouldn't you?  I'd grab both as there doesn't appear to be a waiting list.  I wouldn't want to only take one and then find in a years time that I wanted the other but it had gone.  Having said that it really depends on if you think you'll use both halves - it is a lot of ground on the usual sized allotment.

Suggestion if you go for both:  Don't concentrate on one.  Clear bits of both, otherwise it might look like you are not cultivating one of them and it could be reclaimed (and after you'd paid your £8   )

well just back form an 'on site' visit - great location surrounded by lovely countryside.

The two half plots are right next to each other so essentially a single plot but twice as wide and half the length.

One side is completely uncultivated - still a field really. The other side looks to only have been fairly recently given up - still quite a few sprout stems and other beds around. Some lovely looking strawberry plants and plenty of celery.

I'm gonna take both halves, use the already cultivated side for growing a few crops I didn;t think I'd have room for in the garden and then use the other uncultivated side for growing potatoes, cut flowers and site a shed and compost bin I think.

Really excited now. Should be working but I just want to go start digging...
