NASTY NASTY bug eating my cabbage
« on: November 09, 2006, 08:48 »
NOw if you knew how sad I am at this.... cabbage is my favourite veggie of all and a nasty grug type thing is eating them  UGH.  Wouldn´t mind, but the neighbour whipped a few plants out and put them in her plot!!
The grub is large and a grey/brown colour and is just under the soil, do not know it is there until the plant looks suddenly very sad.
Any suggestions?

Chafer grubs?

Are they anything like these..

http://www.greengardener.co.uk/chafer.htm

They are often a problem in lawns, but can cause problems with cabbage. My little book tells me that the first you know about them are wilting leaves & dying plants - as you describe.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hi Digger Dave, no they are nothing like them, but I have seen them about too!  The grubs are like GIANT FAT catterpillers
Looks like I need to get about with a bucket to pick up everything I see. As for snails we have thousdands of them! Locals eat them, too much fuss for a nasty taste
We are in the rainy season here so it is an all out stampede of creepy crawlies towards my veggies  Off to set slug pellets today.

No not a cut worm either!  Although it was a cut grub when I found it!    Neighbour has put down some powder for me so hopefully the nasty creature will die before it eats any more of my plants
