I emailed the local parish council to see if any allotments were available and got told

We have three sites, two of which are full.  The third one I believe has one half allotment left.

Is it worth going for it??
Good beer, good BBQ and good friends.

Definately, ytou won't regret it. You'll be surprised what you can do on a half one. Then you'll be poised for another one when there are any vacancies.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Go for it, I only had half a plot until this year, and it was sufficient, I put my name back on the waiting list and have been allocated another half.

Try what you are given then see if you need more, being on the site will give you heads up on any plots becoming available.

I've already got five raised beds in my garden - each 4ft by 10ft.

I figured I'd grow bigger and lower maintenance stuff like spuds on the allotment and keep the more needy crops at home where I can do a daily check on them.
