Jerusalem Artiichokes from Sainsbury's or Dobies?
« on: February 22, 2008, 13:55 »
Hi there

I want to grow jerusalem artichokes for the first time, but I'm too mean to spend over £10 for the tubers.  Can I go to my local supermarket instead?  Will they grown and produce tubers, or is this a silly question?

Thanks
Freddie

 have to say my JAs are supermarket ones and they grow just as prolific.

But, at least you can have a "taste" of what the crop will be like BEFORE you plant! :D

You really do need to see if you like them first - I grew them and they're really easy and you get a huge crop.

We found that we didn't really like the taste and they do give you wind.

I think the seed tubers are pricey because of delivery costs rather than anything else. I'd buy some from the shop, see how you like them and plant the rest if you do.

I love them and they are often heavily reduced in our local Tesco. I also blanched at the Dobie's cost, so thanks for this tip !

They make a delicious, healthy and nutritious soup
