My small raised bed
« on: March 01, 2008, 22:44 »
When I read all your messages about your huge allotments I'm a little embarrassed with my small bed.     Today I have dug my raised bed, turned my turf upside down placing this at the bottom and added compost and topsoil - tomorrow I plant!  :D  I'm hoping good things come out of small beds.  It is my 1st attempt and if all goes well perhaps next year I will double up :)

Don't matter about size it's what you do with it

Raised beds are great we used them for about 2-3 years in the back garden, till I got itchy hands for another plot  :D
I got the best ever carrots from them and did brilliant with salad crops, even grew new pots in one they where about 7 x 3, I've gotta grow something else the years don't fell right  :?

Have you looked at the Square foot gardening website ?

Looked out at my bed this morning, looks like the cats think it a huge litter tray   But can't complain to much, its probably my cat!
I am going to plant onion, garlic, beetroot, courgette, cucumber, fennel, peppers, tomatoes, carrots, lettuce, spring onion, Oh and a big scary Dog!
I have big ideas for the small plot, and feel better after looking at the square foot gardening website. Thanks

Newseed, sounds like you'd better start netting your raised beds before your (or other) cat makes the beds a regular habit. A lot of your hard work will go flying out the sides as they continue to dig to China and encourage others to join. Plus, cat poo really shouldn't mix with food growing for human consumption.

Good idea to start smaller until you're more confident with handling seeds, problems, etc before you move onto bigger efforts.

Thanks for the advice, I'm off to the garden centre tomorrow to get the netting. Before poo starts to arrive.
