Strawberries without runners
« on: June 15, 2024, 09:37 »
I`ve got  strawberries which I`ve had for for a number of years and forgotten the variety. They they don`t produce runners so I wonder if anyone might know what they might be.
I have transplanted them a couple of times and because they have a great taste I want to divide and transplant. Would be grateful for any tip on the best time to do this and advice on the dividing. They are quite big so how may divisions should I try? Thanks

I've not heard of dividing strawberries before, sorry
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I have split strawberries if they are amenable to splitting but not until later in the year before it gets too cold. Its worth a try even if you only do a portion of the plot in case it fails?
Happy Gardening May your plot be abundant in veg and free from slugs ! :)

If they are small but very flavorful berries, they might be so-called "Alpine strawberries". Just a guess, but it might lead you to the information you need.

Added later:
This website (a "seller") does have at least some information about runnerless Alpine strawberries, and how to divide the clumps: https://www.reneesgarden.com/blogs/gardening-resources/86117185-alpine-strawberries-true-luxury-from-the-garden
You might find better (or additional) information elsewhere.  Generally, Alpine strawberry varieties are quite variable in appearance, so if yours don't look exactly the same, they could still be Alpine strawberries.

Thanks for that Sp. Mine are not that small, but you have given me an idea. I once pinched a strawberry like these, from a garden visit with the purpose of experimenting with their seeds. So, i`m going to try cultivating the seed as well as slicing off a small section or two. Fingers crossed.
PS I`ve tried the Maras du Bois (sp?) some years ago. If you pick them at the point of going mouldy they have a superb flavour. Unfortunately  the plant wouldn`t survive  for more than a couple of years. On reflection I could have tried the seed process>
