I always grow from seed. It doesn't seem financially logical to grow from sets but so far dire. Hardly any seeds have come up. Growing in trays in greenhouse/conservatory.

Yep, I did some sums and my onion sets, once the dodgy looking ones are filtered out, work out at about 15p each which is clearly exhorbitant. I do like having some things growing over winter though. Now I'm pretty sure half have leaf miner so double that. Then I think how often I buy onions and they're rotten inside. My own ones were all fab last year - this year not so much.

I started trying to grow from seed last year because, frankly, sets just seemed like a waste. I'd plant maybe 10 and there'd be all the rest of this massive bag... I'm not trying to grow too many as the wife isn't overly keen but seriously, who's growing that many onions??

Anyway, biggest tip I've learned so far is to trim the seedlings to about 2 inches off the soil so that they don't collapse and die off. This year I'm going to try planting in Sep and overwintering seedlings to get a really good start next year. Well that's the theory.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll bear it in mind when I start the process later on this year.

Mine have done surprisingly well, and I’m definitely going to try from seeds again 

I never trim mine back, so it isn’t a must do.
