Leeks and green manure (together).
« on: August 31, 2023, 09:55 »
Good morning everyone,
Our leeks are aproximately 12" high and the occupy about 33% of a raised bed.  I wish to cover the remainder with Trifolium pratense, (Red Clover) - Essex Broad as green manure.
Can I scatter a thin covering of the clover between the leeks, will the leeks keep ahead of the growing clover?  (I have enough toilet/kitchen roll tubes to encircle the leeks).

Over to you good people, as it's raining it will take your minds off jobs that need doing but can't!
Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

That sounds interesting Tony
But... depending on number of leeks and spacing I would expect the clover to compete for nutrients. I should confess that this is my conjecture not based on personal experience of this approach. You could perhaps boost the nutrients with some fertiliser??
Keep digging

Assuming you have dibbed your leeks in I would think that the leeks are taking nutrients from deeper in the surface that the red clover will do.

A while back I read up on green manures and remember lots of thinking on under cropping vegetables. I know that's slightly different to what you are suggesting but having the clover may well reduce the nutrients being washed out of the soil over the winter and keep the soil in better condition than without.

Admittedly a lot of this is conjecture.
