Swiss chard roots.
« on: August 29, 2023, 11:08 »
Good morning gardeners,
Pulling up the Swiss Chard and chopping it up to go into the compost,  (the Memsahib isn't too keen on them) I noticed a similarity between the roots and the roots of beetroot.  Does anyone know if these Chard roots are edible?

Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Chard, beetroot (and mangelwurzel too) are all cultivars of the species Beta vulgaris.

This article discusses Beta vulgaris, including edibility of Swiss chard roots: https://www.gardenbetty.com/is-chard-root-edible/

Doesn't sound like the roots are edible as in taste nice, although you could test and let us know?
I would say beetroot leaves are as good as chard.
And like chard the birds go mad for the beetroot leaves.
Annoying as I have to keep them netted.
