The Beauty of Borage
« on: February 22, 2008, 12:41 »
I set out with a little experiment in my office a couple of weeks ago and planted an array of toms and herbs on the windowsills.

Mixed results so far - one type of tom has germinated nicely but the other two still no shows. Nothing from the peppers yet but the fennel is about 2" tall.

Sweet basil looking nice - I put a plastic bag over one of the pots but not the other two so I could see the difference. The bagged one is WAY more advanced.

The real star of the show is the Boarge (starflower) though. It was the first to germinate and has lovely big thick broad leaves already. Very strong and healthy looking compared to the others.

I'll try and grab a photo later.
Good beer, good BBQ and good friends.

Borage is supposed to help support the adrenal gland. It is said that the plant encourages the production of adrenaline, which helps the body cope with stressful situations hence the old saying “Borage for Courage”.
A good plant for the office!!!!!

Also not recommended for people with liver or kidney problems.

Serious herbs are serious stuff, only in moderation, which means very little in this case. 8)

Beautiful though, but also it a weed.  Don't let it seed if you can help. 8)

Mine grew about 4' high last year but it was great for the bees. It has seeded all over the place though.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Borage has no effect on adrenaline production or release.
The flowers are lovely in Pimm's though!

Neighbour was horrified when I planted it last year, kept telling me it was a weed! I´ve only 2 plants come up this year (self seeded) Not far from Real Betis Football Club in Sevill last year there was loads growing along the verges. It might be classed as a weed, but it sure is pretty :D
