Basic Sweet Corn Error by Me
« on: May 02, 2023, 11:09 »
Hi All, I've sown all my sweetcorn in 2 12 inch pots (12 to a pot) and there all coming up, I've just realised that last year they were sown individually in 3 inch pots as they don't like getting the roots disturbed, I'm kicking myself for doing this but is there any advice on how to repot them on without them giving up on me please :(

A bit tricky see what others think but I would just leave them till you plant out.
If you repot then that’s going to be two lots of root disturbance. I’m sure I have planted out several plants from a large pot and not had a problem. Good luck !
Keep digging

In the past I've sown them two to a 5" pot in case one doesn't germinate. Of course, you then get none to a pot or two to a pot! I have gently taken both of the latter out whilst still young then re-planted them. Prefer to do that rather than lose the lot. So far, it's worked ok.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I've tried several methods over the years.  Paper pots are not to bad but a bit of a faff to make.  You just plant the whole thing in the soil when the time comes.  I found I needed to keep them altogether in a washing up bowl otherwise watering led to total disintegration.
The last 3 years I have dispensed with pots altogether.  After chitting I grow them on in an old polystyrene box I had a delivery in,  then just plant them direct from that when big enough and hardened off.  Mine have just gone in the box now.  They seem to do fine that way.  The disturbance doesn't seem to bother them.

Plant the whole lot in one go in a large flexi tub, I grew 10 plants  in a 42ltr bucket last year and had some great sweetcorn.
The bigger the bucket the better, that way you'll get very little root disturbance and more of a chance of a decent crop.
