For pruning our apple and pear trees.
 Lo and behold no matter what I do the following year up comes more water shoots aloft,   what to do??

I think you need to prune in summer to avoid excessive water shoots as otherwise all the dormant buds get activated when the sap rises.

When we moved here two plus years ago, the apple, pear and plum trees had been reduced to stumps so in our first year they grew loads of water shoots. I cut off any growing towards the centre then reduced the rest by two-thirds. Last year they had buds but no fruit This year they did well except they got bitter pit, probably due to the hot weather.

Pruning progress.  I have pruned half of the watershoots back to a side shoot and given the trees a winter wash.  How many washes do I give the trees over the winter period?
