Is this an attempted scam?
« on: November 05, 2022, 13:04 »
I tried to pay my monthly electricity bill by phone today. The electricity company has my card number stored so it should have been a simple exercise. However, the electricity company's payment site flagged up that I needed a one-time authentification password which they would message to my land-line. Sure enough there was a message on my land-line that stated that to proceed, I needed to enter my 16-digit card number. As if I was so stupid!
For the record, the number, an 0800 one, had an automated answer that welcomed me to the Commercial Fraud Operation
I'm pretty sure it was an attempted scam. What do others think?

A one-time code like that is usually just a string of a few random numbers or a short password with a mix of letters and numbers.  I’ve never received one that was linked to my card in any way.

I wouldn't have done it either....
Can you go to their site on-line and do it that way,  then usually only ask for your 3 digit authorisation code?

Better safe than sorry, and I agree, I wouldn't have continued with this transaction either.

There is the possibility it could have been a "man in the middle" attack but if you got to it directly from the provider's own site it is less likely to be fraud.

Call the 'leccy company directly and ask about it.

Good to be sceptical AiC. I think it was a scam.
