sugar snap purple magnolia
« on: June 06, 2022, 15:32 »
Has anyone grown this type before?
First time growing sugar snap peas.
First I am picking them when I can feel the seeds/peas just beginning to form...just?
Looking at pictures they seem rather small relative to the green ones?
Not great flavour really, not that I have eaten a significant amount in the past.
Also I have yet to cook them. Eaten raw in a salad upto now.
Any opinions great fully received.

I grew them once, but wasn't impressed, either  ::)

I let sugar snaps fill out a bit more than that, you get more bang for your buck.

Noticed that one of the plants was producing green sugar snaps. They were significantly bigger...but not as easy to spot. Despite the later, will be planting green next year. Unless someone knows of a alternative colour sugar snap, that produces normally sized pods??

I can thoroughly recommend Sugar Anne for a nice thick-walled sugar-snap pea, they really do look like the pictures on the packet  :D

Yep definitely Smaller as one of the plants turned out to be green sugar snap and the pods are significantly bigger. May save the seeds from that one or splash out on sugar Anne.
Momofstig is that the size they should be picked at? Thought the peas should not have formed properly??

It's mainly mangetout you pick with smaller peas inside, sugarsnap peas you can let them get as big as you like. I leave mine so the pods are thick and the peas are fat (they're still sweet with SA)

SA?
I am definitely picking them far to early.
Do you still cook them with the peas inside? Daft question but I have never grown them before and can't remember what they look like in the supermarket.

SA = Sugar Anne.
Yes, you cook the pods with the peas inside, just like you do runner beans for example.
You have to try them at different stages so you know which is best for the variety you are growing tbh.
I just know from experience that Sugar Anne can be left to get fat, like those in the pic.
Good luck
the King's listing for Purple Magnolia says "best eaten before pods get too big" so be careful...

Cooked some with peas formed, 10 times better. Also the purple magnolia increased in size significantly. I will stick with them as they are easier to find. Will add SAs as well. Just as flavour comparison.
Thanks all.
