Help ! What are these?
« on: March 04, 2022, 16:35 »
Planted these in my greenhouse about a week ago, (see photo), they were definitely in a Leek (Elefant) seed packet I recently bought from Wilko. They don't look like leeks to me, am I right? I thought they normally came up with thin stems sort of doubled over? Also something has been rooting about in there and eaten some, that earth was dead flat when I planted them, but that's another problem, I'm guessing a mouse in my greenhouse  :ohmy:
Anyone help identify these?

With just the seedling leaves, they could be anything (except of leeks/onions!) tbh.
The next 'true' leaves may make it clearer, if you can be bothered to wait?  ::)

Yeah definitely not leeks, grew them last year and don't remember them having baby leaves. Just wanted confirmation. Thanks. Think I'll just pull them out, and reseed with a new pack, still time luckily.
Anyone else have problems of wrong seeds in packet from Wilko, or anywhere for that matter. Really annoying  >:(

If you have the space why not leave them to grow on and sow new leeks in a different tray. Those seedling might grow into something you never thought of growing but turn out to be something you're really glad you did.

Not onions, leeks etc  (one long shoot); not brassicas (four seed leaves). Could be some nice flowers etc. What did the seeds look like?
Complain & ask for a replacement but keep them I see.

Checked the leek seeds against another pack I have, and they looked the same seed. So I investigated further.
Think I've solved the problem, self inflicted I think !
I keep the wild bird seed (Sunflower) in my greenhouse, I think some may have migrated into my compost bag from spillage, or an unknown pest is storing them in there, then I used that compost for the leeks. On closer inspection, I did find some seed in the bag and some husks, they may have overpowered the leek seeds that were planted, as I did find some very stunted leek seedlings when I emptied the tray.
I've saved some of the (sunflower?) seedlings to another tray, to see what happens. :D
Mystery solved methinks  ::)
I'll start again  ::)

Lovely surprise to have the sunflowers though!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Haha, good find on the sunflower.
At least you know its not your compost throwing up something odd in quantity. That would be annoying.

Glad you got to the bottom of it! I sowed some "sprouts" last year - from a brand new and sealed packet - which turned out to be cabbages. Thought they were taking their time to grow in a vertical direction... The inner foil package was labelled as sprouts, too. Shame on you, Fothergill's!
