After a below average year last year with courgettes I’m thinking of planting  them this year in a mound of manure or spent mushroom compost, what’s your thoughts please?

Sounds like a plan, courgettes are pretty easy to grow but do like to be fed!

I'm not following my own advice with the experiment I posted about in another thread.

The advice I would give you: plenty of sun, plenty of room, warmth, try to keep it watered, but not over-watered.

Assuming you mean well-composted manure, I'd use that, but the mushroom compost is also a good choice.
