 Mulling those thoughts over, I'll at least plant the yellow onions first. Maybe plant the reds after the cold snap.

I usually plant mine straight into the ground sometime during March / April depending on the weather.  I have planted them as late as the middle of June and they were still a good size at harvest time.

My Stuttgarter onion sets are sprouting well in the flats I'm using for starting.

Interestingly, the Red Barron sets, purchased exactly the same time, same place, same producer, put in flats exactly of the same type, same compost, same methods, are not showing growth yet.  I guess time will tell.

I think that advise about planting red onion sets later rather than early seems a good idea and one I'm going to try this season because I've found red onions seem to bolt more than the ordinary ones I've ordered a couple of  KG of red Barron for delivery March
