Collecting rocks: are you a rockhound?
« on: February 12, 2022, 14:14 »
I'm a geologist, so collecting rocks, minerals, and fossils is a sort of occupational hazard/benefit.

Rock collecting is enjoyed by a lot of people as a hobby.  Some collect minerals or fossils to display indoors, others to display outdoors in the garden.  I do some of both!

In a minute, I'll update this post with a photo of one of my outdoor (garden) rocks.
Updated: the attached photo shows a small boulder (weighs about 50 pounds) covered with quartz crystals.  I collected (dug) it in Abbeville, South Carolina. I have many garden rocks from the same place, a neighbor has boulders from the same place that are probably a few hundred pounds.  The same place sometimes has amethyst.

What rocks do you collect?  Or if not rocks, do you collect something else?

my wife says I'm  woodhound  because I just cant cut up a good piece of wood for the fire when I'm cutting up wood  for the fire my wife says no your not keeping that

and when I  strip out pallets that a friend gives me there long boards good timber so I try to hide the wood without her seeing it  I always say you can never be without good piece of timber unfortunately that falls on deaf ears but I've managed to salvage some good timber don't tell her indoors  :D :D :D

Rowland, I hear you!

I actually do save interesting bits of wood for a specific purpose.  I have posted here (general gardening area, floral parade thread) that I grow orchids, and some of those grow best on pieces of wood!  Mostly I keep around the resinous heart-of-pine that is from our local loblolly pine. Here is a link that shows one of my orchids on heart-of-pine, posted September 8, 2021:  https://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=134187.msg1559667#msg1559667
