grubs in our plums
« on: August 30, 2021, 09:40 »
this season some of our plums have a small grub inside them? although we put a band round the tree maybe we should have put a grease band round the tree?

I must admit i don't know anything about fruit growing or managing fruit growing only picking um so a bit of advise would be handy Q. when is the best time to put a grease band round the tree and we are getting small plums this season last season no probs

I also need to cut one of the branches of the tree Q is this time of the year the best time to do this so any advise would be very much appreciated RW

Good morning rowlandwells, if these grubs are a delicate shade of pink, banding won't do any good.  They are the caterpillars of the plum moth.  Best thing to do next year is to install a pheromone trap and trap the moths as they approach the plum blossom.

Growing Success Plum Maggot Monitoring Trap is a good one.  Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I'm sure the moths fly in and not walk!  You cannot install the traps too early.
Cheers,  Tony.

I note your replies Tony but the barrier glue [grease band] was to deter winter moths and others is that not a good idea?

Hello use grease bands for winter months and any other bad crawling insect pests, use pheromone traps for plum moth we use to use one to every 3 trees,we also found that the yellow sticky fly traps suspended long ways on under a branch attracted plum moth, check them regularly as we had a blue tit that was trying to get the moths stuck to one    jezza
