Garlic Growth
« on: June 06, 2021, 09:25 »
Hi,

I have quite allot of garlic this year.  As some of mine has leaves which have turned brown and out of curiousity I dug one up.

To my disappointment the bulb was about  as big as my thumb, is this a failed crop or simply too early.

Can't believe in the growing potential left these bulbs are going to quadruple in size.

It's too early for most varieties, but I don't think this will be a good year for garlic tbh *sigh*
Will it be a good year for anything, I wonder....

The brown leaves are probably just a reaction to the sudden heatwave and lack of water. Have you thought of watering with a feed in the watering can?

Could they have been attacked by garlic rust? This tends to stop them getting any bigger and once the leaves are dead you are not going to get anymore bulb growth. I’ve always found close spacing seems to encourage it.

Mine seem very healthy so far with thick stems and no sign of rust. Just noticed the scapes appearing on mine yesterday and added a few to a stir fry. Wow, they were strong

Some of my garlic has grown into multiple plants, the individual cloves have sprouted their own foliage :(

I don't think they have rust, they look pretty decent above ground, thick stems, quite a bit of green leaves left.
Like yourself I also had the scapes last week - they are nice treat.

I would say I doubled the spacing I had last year, maybe they just don't grow well on my allotment.

I'll leave them for another few weeks, nothing to loose.

If there’s still greenery then I reckon they’ll put on a fair bit of bulk yet. It’s still only early June in a late year so far. I remember harvesting one time when they looked ready, but had barely started bulbing up.

If it was me, i'd give them lots of water.  All this sunshine and plenty of water and they might put on a late spurt.
