Garden peas
« on: May 24, 2021, 10:06 »
I normally don't bother with peas because they do need to be in very early here or they frazzle in the sun. Since I changed to raised beds I tried growing a la Charles Dowding... even used the variety he was growing. Well because we have had such a cold spring they have done well... so well I think I need a cherry picker to get them off the plants  I have a lot of seed left for next year but I may seek out a lower growing variety these are about seven feet tall and higher

Mine have all grown quite tall as well. Yes, 7+ ft tall, with heavy yields, still producing, but slowing down as the summer heat is starting (35 C forecast this week).  All of mine are snow peas and sugar snap peas. I planted in December 2020.

Shows how your climate really is milder than ours, jambop - my Alderman are only about 8ins tall  ::)

Winterkefe peas, which I sow in Feb and grow in the greenhouse border, each year,  have only managed to grow to 3ft rather than their usual 5-6ft tall. So even in the greenhouse it has been unseasonably cold.

It is milder no doubt about that. We tend to get very light frosts if they arrive but this year the spring has been abysmal. Today for example we would normally have about 25C but it is 12C ! It is going to be better later in the week but really relatively speaking we are having terrible weather this spring. Saying that because of the cooler conditions some things are doing fine potatoes, peas and onions are going quite well but things that would normally be doing fine are just not growing. I cannot get my beans to germinate and the tomatoes are well behind normal and feeling the cold. The strawberries are wondering what the hell is going on
