Tree Onions
« on: February 18, 2008, 08:31 »
A kind gent gave me four tree onion bulbs planted in a small pot, they seem like they are too close together considering how large they can get.

Would I better to try and separate them and re-pot them (they are growing) or to remove the bottom of the pot and plant that in the ground?

Advice appreciated

I would plant them up one by one, as they can be multiplied by division of the underground bulb, a bit like garlic.

Me too, i thought the chap was having a laugh with me to begin with!
Apparently the oniony looking bulbs grow into plants that produce further bulbs where normal onions would develop flowers. these can be picked and eaten or re-planted.

I think they're also called walking onions, something to do with the way they multiply. Not sure though

I've got some and they're very hardy apparently. Rabbits have had a go at them but they look as if they're coming back

They have many names, we know them as Egyptian onions here.
Whatever the name, they make a cluster of tiny bulbs at the top of the main stem later in the season. That whole bulb is heavy enough to tip the stalk over, further from the main bulb, all the little bulblets will root, and continue travelling. Definitely separate them and plant them where you won't be hoeing or rotovating.
They're a bit strong for my taste, but good when there's not much else out and you want a bit of onion flavour.
