pricking out brassicas
« on: March 31, 2021, 09:21 »
as we sow all our brassicas seeds in trays in the greenhouse then pot them on before planting them out on the allotments I've always pricked them around the two leave stage but  one needs to be careful as they do tend to bend even though handling them with the leaf not the stem

would you suggest  i should leave them to grow a little longer before pricking out into pots or will they get to leggy? any advise much appreciated

RW I sow mine in modules and leave one in each until they get planted out, so no pricking out for me  ;)

If they are a bit leggy you can plant them deep, so that the first leaves are at ground level.

I find it best to prickout once the first true leaves have formed. I always sow brassica very thinly then get them as deep as possible in the cell trays when i prick them out but they may still get a bit leggy. They are usually fine when they are planted out i put them in as deep as possible and firm them in really well.
