Sawn Wood Bits
« on: March 17, 2021, 16:29 »
Not Dust but bigger cuts from my Chain Saw is it advisable to dig in to my soil or leave well alone. Been told to dig it in well, also told No as it will make my Soil Claggy. What would you advise me to do, use or discard. Thank You.

I find chainsaw chippings a good mix with green material in the compost bins, otherwise i use as a mulch to suppress weeds. Very fiddly to burn as you won't get much airflow through the fire bed so would be very smoky, unless you get a fire going with other fuels then add the chippings in small quantities at a time.

Wood bits shouldn't make your soil sticky.

That stickiness sometimes occurs when sodium gets into clay soil, out of balance with calcium and magnesium.

Wood chips can hold moisture, but I have never seen that turn a soil muddy or sticky. The tendency for stickiness is from the clay and sodium imbalance.

Remember that the  woodchips will likely have chain oil on them .
