New Raspberry Plant question.
« on: March 11, 2021, 16:58 »
So I ordered 6 raspberry canes last Autumn . Took a while in the post ( I wanted a specific variety - Polka  - Autumn fruiting, and couldnt source in Ireland so ordered from UK) and they were a bit bedraggled when they eventually arrived . Soaked them , planted and over wintered them in situ . Pruned back to about 30 cm end of January . In a decent new bed with virgin soil/compost mix.

They have a few very small buds but apart from that little signs of life  - unlike the new blackcurrant which is full of green buds.
Am i being too impatient as they are still dormant or are the  probably dead ?
And if they are dormant when should signs of life appear

Thanks

My blackcurrants have buds but the raspberries don't, so nothing to worry about.
When should life appear? - when they decide it's been mild enough to make the effort  :D

Hi, I have a bed of polka raspberries and have found them to be hard as nails so I don’t think they’ll be dead. Mine are just coming through now but they’re in a sunny part of the garden so are one of the first things to show growth in my garden.

I wouldn’t fret, they’ll come through but the weather will decide when. Give it a few years and you’ll be cursing them lol as they start throwing up shoots all over the garden.

Good luck.

Sounds like par for the corse for raspberry canes. They look like dead sticks until they get going, usually later than blackcurrants when planted in the ground.
