       I,am. hopefully, going on holiday the first fortnight in july. will I be able to plant my
          first earlies in early may, to crop them when I return ??

Should be fine by my reckoning, don't think one or two weeks over will matter too much. If you can, make sure they are watered while you're away, in case of dry spell.
