White Coat Syndrome
« on: November 24, 2020, 15:13 »
Yesterday I had a rheumatology appointment at the hospital.  First I had to go to the audio dept, for a hearing aid adjustment.  The appointment was quite early, and I didn't sleep well.   The nurse called me and took my blood pressure, it was 166/78, she tutted at me and I assured her I don't normally suffer with it
After the appointment I decided to walk along to the supermarket leaving my car parked up.   I only wanted a couple of things, but as I wandered around my trolley got quite fuller.  (I had also had a steroid injection in my elbow).   I was just going to the checkout when I remembered I had no car.  Thinking I will have to abandon this, I turned round and a friend was just behind me.   She very kindly took me and the shopping back to the Hospital.    When I got home, I was completely exhausted, ate a box of stollen bites  and had a sleep.
During the evening I took my BP a couple of times and it was down to 103/58.   I went to bed, slept soundly, and this morning the BP was 120/70.    Which is what it normally is.
A told my neighbour and he said, that always happens when folk go to hospital, hence the name   Have you heard of this Syndrome  :D :D ?    Mrs Bouquet

That’s very common Mrs B.

Next time you go to have your BP checked take it 3 times before you go with a bit of time between each.  Take that list of readings with you to the clinic/surgery.

I suffer from white coat syndrome.  They have to take mine several times and it's lower each time.  My blood pressure was high when I was expecting the children but it started high at the first appointment and never got any worse, the medical people just accepted that was how I was and not to panic at the numbers.

I get the BP chart from the docs a week before my appointment and do 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening every day for the week, they take an average of those readings as like you, I too have WCS
