I've said this many times that commercial carrot growers spray against carrot fly because there are acres and acres of field grown carrots that are destined for the supermarket shelves and  carrots are harvested  i would say many months of the year

 i have tried to buy some of that magical spray but its not for sale to the home gardener and your probably rite growing our own is a more healthier option but just think of the tonnes of carrots sold each year sprayed with chemical sprays but off cause the more healthier option would be to buy organic carrots but i bet i know which carrots people buy would it be organic or non organic?

I remember when I first started veg gardening the carrots I grew were perfect every year... because I used a product called bromophos sprinkled along the the rows. Of course like many other organo phosphates it was banned. Just a personal view but in the quantities used by the home gardener it was pretty harmless but on the back of farm use especially sheep farmers who were bathing in it it was banned. Farmers have access to lots of chemicals that would be pretty innocuous in the garden but they strangely are allowed to spray huge acreages.
