unhealthy looking tomato seedling leaf
« on: March 19, 2020, 09:56 »
Hello

Most of my seedlings are doing fine. Sown on the 23rd Feb. Some are now in the Greenhouse, but there is an unusual marking on the 2 leaves of one plant which has alwasy been indoors, mainly under growlights (amateur variety, new seeds) - photo below. Is this something to be concerned with, have I over \ under watered, is it a disease?

The plant itself is coming on ok sizewise

edit - I should as the leaf is not quite as yellow as it looks in the first photo with the flash, but it is lighter than some others.

Thanks

Al

I'm not sure if it is a disease, especially if it's only a leaf or two. Most likely, as you say, watering too much or too little or too irregular. I'd probably just leave it, or even pull the leaf off. The plant looks healthy enough to me.

Others with more knowledge than me should be able to help if it is a disease!

Thanks will leave it be for now and see how it gets on - maybe it got a bit too close to the window or growlights also.

A couple of questions...
1.What wattage is your grow light?
2. how close it to the plant?
3. How long have you got the light on for?
I have used grow lights for many years for both chillies and tommys, one thing I have disvovered is the tommy leaf is not as robust as chillies.
My light is a 300w LED  and I have it a min three foot above the plants. The amount I discovered is also important, I have found an average of ten hours a day to work well, this is part of photoperiodism, plants require dark periods as much and possibly more important than light periods to convert the light stored into nutrients for growth
So it could simply be that there is too much light, too close a light or possibly even something in the compost.

Hi Aidy:

1.What wattage is your grow light?
I'm using a Geopod with the lights that came with it which I believe are 24W which is a lot less than yours.
2. how close it to the plant?
different lengths - I've raised the level a bit but some were getting quite close so maybe this is it - nowhere near 3 foot away.
3. How long have you got the light on for?
16 hours at the moment - maybe too much from your post - I can try reducing it to 12 hours.

Most will go out to the greenhouse soon, but want to keep some here in case the allotment gets locked down \ I need to isolate. I will also do another batch soon.

Sounds like possibly light on too long and too close, or maybe too close to the window itself.

Possibly a tad too much light.
I made this mistake in the early days and then started to research photoperiodism (my fave word that) and discovered they did not have enough rest period, many scientist belive dark is more important so the plant can convert but of course you need a balance.
If you take chillies, most grow around the equator and they will receive on average 13 hours a day of sun so dont need loads of daylight.
Maybe give them a little nitrogen kick. I use Maxicrop seaweed extract (brown bottle) and find that works well.
Good luck.

Just thought I'd update this to say the plant has grown on without issue and now has it's first flower truss, in case anyone comes across this same issue again and wondered re the outcome.

edit sorry not sure why image is sideways!
