undecided?
« on: March 05, 2020, 13:02 »
undecided can't make my mind up what to do for the best  so what's all this about sowing seeds all be it veg and flower seeds some are telling me to hold back there's plenty of time some are saying go ahead with seed sowings because the time's getting on to sow seeds  I'm going dizzy what to do

do I sow now in the propagator and risk putting the raised seedlings  in a cold greenhouse or hold on to see if the weather is going to change and possibly get a tad warmer then there's the risk when the plants are ready to put in the allotment will the ground be cultivated in time? because our ground is still sodden including our raised beds

then there's the planting our potatoes and onion sets that are on hold because the ground is as said more for planting rice than potatoes and sets I was thinking about putting our sets in pots prior to planting out to give them a start what to do that is the question?

Too early to plant anything here unless you've got heat.  I had to scrape the frost off the car this morning (Glasgow) so nothing is going to grow in that.  I'm in the plenty of time brigade and will continue to gaze lovingly at my collection of seed packets /potato tubers and dreaming of warmer days ahead.

I've got peppers and aubergines on the go inside.  There are onions, cabbage, greens and a few bits and bobs on the go in the unheated greenhouse and there is not a lot of room left.  The seed spuds are in the shed and are staying there for a while.

I can't see the point of racing ahead when the ground is cold and soaking wet and I have no more space to cosset seedlings, so a cautious start made, but nothing dramatic.

No rush for much yet. I was pretty late with most things last year but still had good harvests. The older I get the more patient I become on the sowing front - most stuff catches up as it's not sat sulking in the cold.

Another one waiting patiently. I have the chillies sown in pots and under double cover in the polytunnel and I'll sow my aubergines and leeks this weekend at home. Everything else can wait still.

I have sown some basil/coriander coming along nicely.

I have also sown a few peppers (they seem to take an age to germinate so thought I would give them an early start and some caulis. I also have started some salads in modules and they are coming to life.

although all of these are on the windowsill in the back bedroom, hoping that they I can give them a head start for when the weather dries/warms up.

I usually have started all sorts by now but am holding off as my tomatoes usually go leggy anyway as I sow them too early, so this year im holding off for a couple of weeks yet, at least.

I'm experimenting this year as it's my first year with Growlights and a Greenhouse (unheated, at the allotment).

So I've started off quite a few tomatoes, some cucumbers and a few peppers weekend before last. Even with the Growlights I think the tomatoes were getting a bit leggy but I potted them on this week and all seem ok so far.

I strongly suspect most won't make it, but it's a good experiment for me as last year I had less than 1% germination rate from my tomatoes.

I'll likely do this all again at the end of the month but with a bit of luck and a warm sunny April they might make it in the Greenhouse then.

I've also left my early potatoes in too warm a room so they have 'chitted' very well so I think I will get those in the ground this weekend or early next week.

Peas went straight in the ground last Saturday. Soil temp appeared to be around 10C but it was the first time using my soil thermometer so possible I read that wrong, will test again but it has been mild here in London.

I'm on the south coast. I have sowed broad beans which have germinated and are now outside. I have also sowed lettuce, coriander, spring onion and radish which could be a little early. They are being put outside under cover when they germinate. I will plant out under fleece in a few weeks. I'm copying Charles Dowding's growing methods here.

This weekend I plan on sowing sweet peppers. I did sow some super hot chilies back in January but have had no success with them.

Over the years, most veg we've sown later in the season have played catch-up, and if I was a muse on the subject, I'd be pleased to be a seed, germinated in the warm late Spring, and having lots of sunshine and a good slurp to get going much quicker than starting off in a freezing shed with no mates...

Here in Lancashire I am going to wait. I put some broad beans in pots in a coldframe two weeks ago and there is no sign of any germination yet. I will start with some broad beans in a couple of weeks assuming it stays reasonably dry, and first early potatoes towards the end of the month. Even then I will be ready with fleece for frosts which can occur here as late as early May.
