A tenner a pop!
« on: January 25, 2020, 12:03 »
Good afternoon everyone,
I've been looking at grafted tomato seedlings and "Shocked and stunned" at the price.  Rootstock seeds seem to be going for 12 for £2:00 I think I'll give it a go.  Now, if anyone out there has practicle knowledge of this procedure, I'd like them to let me know the pitfalls etc.

Cheers,  Tony. :)

I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

I don't know if there's any advantage to grafted toms or just growing them from seed but others will know on here.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

We got one  grafted tomato from a garden centre, took over the greenhouse with lots of leaves and very little fruit.  What we did get , if I remember correctly it was a cooking type tomato, was very tasty but not much return for the space it took up.

I read somewhere (possibly James Wong) that if you plant the shoots you trim off a tomato between the stalk and the branches then hurrah, free great plant.

Sorry, I'm not good with tomatoes, we don't have a greenhouse or polytunnel and cats sit on and slugs eat ours before we get far. I cannot remember the correct terminology  :(. Sorry.

Yes, the side-shoots root in water or just poked into the soil as long as you remember to water them now and again :)

Grafting tomatoes onto vigorous rootstocks is common practice for the large growers to maximise yield per plant. It takes skill but if you buy rootstock seed and your scion seeds, cheap enough to accept a high failure rate.
Both Moles and Kings sell rootstock seeds. There's a really good video showing how to do it on this page:
