It is strong stuff, so don't put it straight onto the garden.
If it comes as is and you have a compost heap, it makes a fantastic activator. You need to let it rot down with something to stop it being a stinking mess, so a even a small compost bin where you can mix it with shredded paper/green stuff would be a good idea.
If it comes with bedding material, stack and compost it. I use the stuff I get from the coop as mulch round fruit bushes. The initial layer was composted, but now I just chuck it on the top of what is already there. The free-range stuff from round the garden doesn't get picked up, but I only have a few bantams, so it is small and scattered.
