Interesting chicken facts wanted...
« on: February 04, 2008, 14:53 »
I've been roped into doing a presentation on the basics of keeping chickens as part of my course (Im studying medicine but am doing a short course on teaching methods and its part of the coursework. Everyone in my group thought it would be great to do it on chicken keeping and bring in chickens etc!)
As part of it we would like to do a daft quiz for audience participation. Kind of guess the answer eg - what is the average number of eggs a hen will lay in a year? etc
Was wondering if anyone could share any interesting facts that could be useful for this (and for general interest)???
Once i have finished it I could send the whole presentation to one of the chicken type moderators if you want to upload it onto the site?

Guardian link

It has been speculated that dinosaurs had feathers and they laid eggs so I guess it's not too far a leap...except for the size and big pointy teeth of course !

other stuff i have found out:

- chickens were sacrificed as a sun symbol but them romans thought they represented mars the god of war (presumably due to cock fighting)

- there are more chickens on earth than people - would like to know actual nmbers but cant find

- the greatest number of yolks recorded in one egg was 9

- a chicken can travel at 9mph using a combination of running flying and jumping (I can believe that one when i go out with the corn in the afternoon!)

- chicken pox was not anything to do with chickens - The name came from an old English expression "gican pox", meaning "itching pox".
