Sometimes you just have to go with the flow in growing.  You mentioned seeds - I'm not 100% sure on the law but I think you can bring in (to the UK) seeds from the EU but not from without. This sounds right as it makes no environmental sense whatsoever and is therefore about what you'd expect from a government.

I did notice the Japanese seed packs showed what looked like a climate map - whereas British seed suppliers know there's no difference between Aberdeenshire and Cornwall.

Agree it does sound about right regarding seeds. Still I will do some research. Seed packs tend to use three zones. There is quite a difference between the costal region and that inland. The soil here is like sand so even that is open to interpretation.
At the moment I'm really pushing that, having planted carrots and spuds at the end of September.
