One cob per sweetcorn plant.
« on: August 28, 2018, 12:23 »
Usually I get two per plant but this year there's only one!  :( Anyone else had the same thing?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Me too.  Last year I had two good cobs per plant, plus even the ones in the tillers were worth harvesting, although a lot smaller.   This time, only one per plant, and nowhere near as good as last year's.

I've often only got one per plant  ::)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

There was only so much watering my conscience would allow me to do while my sweetcorn were growing, and I've noticed that the difference in size of the plants follows the arc of the spray from where I normally positioned the sprinkler!

Unfortunately, that has also been reflected in the number and size of cobs - one or two of the best watered have 2, one or two of the relative runts haven't managed one.

You think it would have been a vintage summer for sweetcorn, although strangely enough overall the results
are going to be similar to an average summer for me (i.e. averaging very little more than one cob per plant.)

(Using the past tense here - I actually I only picked the first one a couple of days ago, and extremely yummy it was too!  :))
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I've been getting my usual 2 (occasionally 3) but they were watered a lot as they're not too far from the water butt  :D

Only one on each plant on mine too, where I would often get 2 in previous years. Problem of not pollinating right up to the end is on every cob this year too.

Most of mine are already eaten, the taste is good, just the quantity is less.

OH has just brought two cobs in from the greenhouse and neither were fully-pollinated by any means. I fed with BFB early on, added some chicken pellets later, watered them every few days then tapped the tassels to release the pollen onto the silks like I normally do. Is it my fault?

From memory, your technique has worked well in the past GG, so I'd be inclined to blame the weather this year (works for me, sort of! )

OH is not a happy bunny which is why I posted this and I don't think using the weather as an excuse is going to help me.

Down here in Hampshire, we have had a lovely crop of sweetcorn "Incredible".  Posting a photo of those picked today (sharing the wealth with neighbours!).  We had a block of 35 plants, and have got 2 off most of them.

I also grew Incredible for the first time,  I sowed direct into the ground after giving a friend the ones in pots. They have been really good, loads of cobs and  fully ripe, this despite drought, very light soul and very occasional watering!
