Does it matter whether I use liquid or granular ericaceous fertiliser for my blueberries? There seem to be folk who insist on liquid but I am not sure why. Miracle Gro sulphate of iron granular also seems popular.

Does any one know the reasoning and is there a favourite amonst the forum?

I would say that granular feed will last longer than a liquid one because they slowly dissolve when the plants are watered, whereas liquid-based feed will get more dilute as time goes on.

I was worried that granules lying on the surface might damage the shallow fibrous root system and thought this might be the reason that some folk insist that you use a liquid feed

I put some slow release granules around the plants in the spring but I've also applied a liquid feed a few times.  There's been a noticeable improvement withing a few days of the liquid feed, perhaps because of how dry things have been this year the granules aren't breaking down as quickly? I wouldn't worry about root damage from them, the roots aren't that close to the surface - not here at least.

I only use ericacious liquid feed because I have small children and I worry about them eating the granules, though others may have other reasons...
