A tale of two grow bags...
« on: August 01, 2017, 20:06 »
Our philosophy is to grow toms in as many different conditions as we can, in case blight calls.

So they get planted into the greenhouse in pots of compost, in front of the greenhouse in trays, on a smallish garden at The Turrets, under a shaded west window in a big grow bag, along the conservatory wall (east facing), under an east facing wall under some shade. Also they get a session down at the Patch, where they fend for themselves in fabulous, contorted disarray...

So, the pics show two of the East facing conserv walls. they have from left to right - four per BIG grow bag - Gardener's Delight, Home-seed Crimson Crush, Shirley, Shirley, Golden Cherry, Gardener's Delight, Home-seed Crimson Crush, Country Taste.

The grow bag on the left is not doing its stuff is it, although there is more fruit and less greenery!

I've watered both lots the same time, and fed them the same time, but leftie is a wimp as far as grow bags are concerned, but the toms keep coming...

Luckily, our policy is to grow far too many plants in case of blight, and we give away the extras to family and local lovely chums, but grow bags are not getting my vote this year...

I've got to the stage that I don't trust bagged compost or growbags any more  :(  You pay good money but get bags of cr rubbish  >:( I think it's all the green waste that they use to replace peat. (I've seen what people put in their green waste bins, and don't want to grow my veg in it tbh !)

There are a few places that still sell peat, so I'm checking prices, plus I've seen comments elsewhere about compost that contains no green waste. It is being trialled by an ex forum member, so may see what their results are before trying it   ;)

Good point Mum.

I'd never trust any council bagged stuff, as anybody can chuck in marestail, knotweed etc, and also T. Wells charge a heck of a lot for it...

I feel a complaint coming on, but looking at the toms in the left-hand grow bag, they're doing better, possibly because whatever 'nutrients' they've added are different ratios. It seems that there is more nitrogen in the right hand grow bag, and another one elsewhere looks the same!

It's only really an observation, we grow so many toms, mainly in case blight visits, and there are more important concerns like what to do with a mammoth radish when I eventually get them sown!

I can't remember what program it was, but they were making compost from sheep's wool (& someone else from from bracken) both were supposed to be good substitutes for peat.  No idea of costs, as a by product you'd hope it wouldn't be too bad but as they are independent companies the delivery might be
