Auntiemogs' hoyas...
« on: May 26, 2017, 21:06 »
Hi Auntie!

To let Rookie off the hook, here's the situation so far...

The three cuttings you gave me are all still thriving, but not flowering.

We had a chat with a chum in High Banks Nursery here, and he said that a cool greenhouse was the key for winter, and then let them go in the spring.

The stems are a yard long, and one looks very promising so they're now in a light plastic covered lean-to, waiting for a glimpse of a flower!

When they do, they'll come inside and Mrs Growster can tend them to an inch of their lives...

Gorgeous leaf system, I'd love to know more about them!

Hope you're keeping well anyway!

Hi Growster!

I found this, which may be useful:-

They do seem to be pretty indestructible  :nowink:, as I've just rooted my cuttings in a glass of water (sometimes for months!) and bunged them in whatever compost I've had handy.  They're also good in that they don't need too much water, so I just let them get on with it, as you can tell when they need a drink (the leaves start to thin).

Mum's plant is doing very well in her conservatory, so I may well move mine out to the greenhouse for now, in the hope that I'll get some flowers this year.  :)

That's a very interesting link, Auntie, thank you so much!

I gave them a serious talking to this evening, and as one has a stem well over a yard long, they had a lot to think about afterwards!

It sounds like they need a bit of discipline Growster (you tell 'em!).

I have one in a hanging basket, and when the stems get too long I snip the ends off and add them to my 'rooting glass' (which means I have even more hoyas!).  I suppose you could train it up something?
