Do I need to water first earlies now?
« on: May 13, 2017, 17:09 »
I planted 2 kinds of first early potatoes about 2 weeks ago and it got cold after that for a while. It's warmed up a bit here in London and I'm wondering if I should water them yet? Thanks

I always give mine a good soak once a week if we have not had any decent rain

Me as well - a regular supply of water reduces the risk of scab.

I never water potatoes, as many growers do not. (now the Southern drought might be another matter, I donno...)

However, at flowering time, it is said to increase the crop greatly, if you soak them then.

Keep watering earlies about once a week. The rest only if it is very dry until tubers start to form, i.e. about flowering time, when they need a good soak.

My Desiree potatoes are just showing tiny flower heads, (well, not all of them I must admit), so here's hoping the heavy rain forecast for Wednesday actually shows up this time :).

I didn't know that, Salmo.

I always thought that the tubers started much earlier than that, so thanks for the info!

Some of them have formed by then but plenty of water encourages them to produce more of them and bulks up the rest

I haven't watered mine despite the prolonged dry spell but they are not yet mature enough to be producing tubers, and it looks like the dry spell is coming to an end with todays rain, plus low pressure over the UK for the next week at least (must be a bank holiday approaching).

Last year, we had a lot of Hollow Heart (thanks Mumofstig for identifying that one), but this year the weather conditions are totally different, and they're just emerging, so fingers crossed...
