I'd never heard of it, let alone tasted it. But have been given two at a Plant Exchange at the weekend and told that you plant the whole thing - which looks a bit like a misshapen pear. They each have a shoot/root(?) coming out of the wider end. I've put them in a couple of pots for the moment and have searched online for info, but wondered if anyone on here has any experience or advice. Thanks for any help.

When growing up in Australia. the chayote - or choko as it was (appropriately) locally named - was a great big romping thug of a plant almost impossible to eradicate. I doubt whether it would behave that way in the UK. The problem was more, from my perspective at the time, that the veg is pretty vile - bland, tasteless, easily becoming watery. In the Caribbean they fill it with spiced crab meat - which does wonders for the christophine (as it is called there), but rather wastes the crab in my opinion. My English parents boiled it. Not a treat.
