Hazel bean poles in Scotland?
« on: April 07, 2017, 22:04 »
Does anyone know where I can get Hazel bean poles, or something similar near Glasgow?  My bamboo canes are looking a bit raggedy this year and I am not sure they will last another year.  Hazel poles look so much more  attractive, I just don't know where I can buy them from locally.

If you can find a small nursery / garden centre they might know. It's not the sort of thing you see on sale very often these days. Ideally you would need to contact someone connected to a big estate... one of the workers might be able to point you in the right direction. A woodsman?

Where I am I'd try someone connected to the Goodwood Estate or I would try asking someone who knows the local woods at Eartham or Slindon. None of this helps you I know :(

Most people probably use 6' (bamboo) canes which nurseries would sell. They last several years if they are cleaned off and kept dry over winter but I can understand your interest in natural bean poles.

Good luck with your search.

Give the local wildlife Trust a ring, or the Forestry Commission. They may know of someone who coppices hazel and could supply.

Good idea - didn't think of forestry commission.

A quick google shows Redlees urban park as running coppicing days so might be worth a look.

Thanks for the pointers.  I don't seem to have found any long enough on ebay and would much rather drive out nearby and get them to avoid excessive delivery charges.  I had no success with Facebook friends either, but I am guessing newly cut coppice would root too easily so I might just have to do my searching next winter.  I am just not sure my canes will last this year, but I suppose I only might need to replace a few.

I don't quite understand why they are not readily for sale as we don't all have access to woodlands but probably live fairly close to woodlands that could be coppiced this way.

They  normally coppice in winter when the sap is down but any roots thrown out would ensure the row of  beans did not blow over ! :)
