Carrots are good for containers with the bonus that if they are tall enough you avoid root fly. Don't sow too thickly and water now and then, that's about it!

Digger, Good idea.
I've grown a few things in tubs including runners, potatoes tomatoes courgettes aubergines peppers , chillies.  My only advice would be consider carefully where you position them with respect to watering.  You'll not want to think you are cutting down the work load only to find that you become a slave to the watering can.  Also you'll be refilling them every year and that might be a fair bit of lugging about too.

Good luck
