Chicken fencing - non electric
« on: September 21, 2016, 21:35 »
Pondering on a purchase from omlet. Been having a look at their chicken fencing. The non electric stuff. Seems exactly what I need to give the girls a bit more free ranging freedom.  Bit pricey though!
Does anyone have it, or anything similar?

If its just for temporary and you don't need to keep foxes out, then the temporary fencing that builders use it what we had.  Okay, mainly in orange, but I think it comes in other colours too now.  Much cheaper than paying £79 for 12m!

On the other hand, if you wanted permanent, then we also bought weldmesh which was 1m high x 30m I think, for about £45.  Fox proof, but younger chickens can fly over it, but it looks like that Omlet stuff isn't high enough to keep chooks from flying over either.  We've had chickens fly over a 6ft fence before!

Just to give you an idea!

Thanks Annie!  It's a bit of both really. Semi permanent! I would prefer not to have it but don't trust the girls not to wander into trouble when they are let out of the run.
If I'm not in the garden they have to stay in the run which is as fox proof as I can make it. Weldmesh, and then some!  We have lots of foxes.  This idea is just to corale them into an section of the garden where I can see them and keep them from wandering off into the borders, or to denser areas where a fox could be lurking, or towards the river or onto neighbouring land.
i like that it will merge in with the garden so won't spoil our enjoyment of it, but can be taken down very easily if we are opening to the public. Not that we do that very often!  But, it's that sort of flexibility that we need.
Wish it was a bit higher, but at 1.25 it's not too bad.  As you say a determined flapper will get over anything! Can always clip a wing if necessary.
We had tried with a length of stock fencing that we had left over in the shed, but not very practical for putting up and taking down or moving about. It puts up too much of a fight!  Netting fixed on pronged poles seems a perfect solution.  Just wish I could find the same thing cheaper. Might have to raid the egg money for a contribution towards it!

I think, like many companies Omlet just play on their famous 'name'!  It's like what some people charge for chicken coops!    I do hope you find just what you are looking for Flowerpot, without giving oodles of money to them!   ;) ;)

Actually this is a pic of my brassica cage. Although the green is a bit bright, at least it's not orange! LOL
