Saving Peas for Seed
« on: July 31, 2016, 18:05 »
Hi :)
I've had a terrible year for pea germination  and i'll have ended up buying four packets by the time I'm finished. My last sowing has only half a dozen coming through.

As good pea seed isn't cheep, I was thinking about saving some from this years crop, but if germination has been so poor, does that mean I'm just saving pods from poor germinating stock ?

Does anyone else save their own pea seed and how successful is it compared to bought fresh at the start of the next season.

If you leave them on the plant 'til the pods start to yellow, then bring them indoors to finish drying, your pea seeds should germinate as good (if not better than) bought seed.
Keep them in a paper bag/envelope somewhere dry and in an even temperature and they'll be good to go in Spring  :)

Thanks for that. I've got a late sowing of about half a dozen plants coming through (planted about fifty ) which I was going to give up on because there are so few, but I'll let them grow on now just for the seed.  :)

Last year I grew what were supposed to be sugarsnap peas. They turned out to be a mix of sugarsnaps and mangetout  >:(
So I saved seeds only from the few fattest sugarsnaps, and grew them on again this year, ate a few, just to check  :tongue2: and now have enough seed drying for a decent sized row next year  :)

At least I'll be sure of what's in the packet  ::)

I can't believe I haven't thought about doing it before ! Just hope I'm not too late with this last sowing as they are only a couple of inches out of the ground at the moment.

I have a bag of Douce Provence peas I saved Three years ago, and they still germinate and produce well.
We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between we garden.

That's good to know, thanks. I just need to make sure we don't eat them all !

I lay out the late grown peas that are too full and not sweet enough on newspaper in the front room, out of the sun in a table. Over a couple of weeks they dry as the sun heats gently the  room and evaporates the moisture from them. Into a paper bag and away til next march. I save seed for lots of things this way. Labels are a must!
