Hi I've just pulled 2 bulbs out and found this mould on them does anyone know what it is?
This is my third year growing in around the same place with no previous problems.
Will it still be safe to eat, thanks.

My guess is that it's been attacked by one of the allium pests (onion fly, allium leaf miner, or leek moth) which has opened the door to fungal attack.

You could eat any parts which have not been affected, but unfortunately there doesn't appear to be much which hasn't on that particular bulb.

You mention it is the third year growing them in the same place..... it is a good idea to choose a different area next year, to avoid perpetuating whatever it is, and grow non-alliums there instead

I would suggest it is rot due to the wet and warm weather conditions. I have had a couple of bulbs of real garlic that look similar. It looks on mine like the papery skin has rotted. If you rub it off the cloves may be sound underneath. When I dug mine I was surprised how warm the soil was under the ground, I could almost feel myself getting 'athletes foot'.

I do have ordinary garlic about a foot away which would seem to okay for now,I'll know in a few weeks when it's ready to pull up.
Oh and I'll plant it next time further away.
