Leek germination...
« on: April 30, 2016, 16:17 »
For the first time ever, I'm now trying to germinate my fourth large tray of leeks so I can get to the required number for the winter.

We only use leeks from November onwards, so they're all winter varieties, but this year's starters - nope! Not good!

What's going on?

Seem to have had a non-start with the parsnips this time, so will chuck some more in shortly.

Too cold? We have just germinated a pot of leeks in the house and have got 50% germination despite the seeds being a couple of years old.

I may even resort to Digger Dave's method of using a cat litter tray for intermediate potting on to get to pencil size, as as far as I can see, I can count them all on several hands, which is new to me...

Not that I dispute Digger Dave's methods of course - phew..;0)

(Dave, you know where I live, there's a  cup of tea pint at the local whenever you want to call round)!

Ive got musselburgh again, germinated fine and growing wll,i sow them in 13cm pots and separate later never had a problem with any variety sown up to now.
I left the pots in my potting shed untill they germinated and have been outside for about 4 week now in a sheltered place

My first lot took 7 weeks to start showing, in the cold greenhouse. I sowed some more 10 days ago and they are already showing.  Stange year.

I sowed leek seeds in a seed tray indoors on the 6th April.
The first sprouts showed on the 11th April.
I moved them outside to a cold frame on 21st April.
Yesterday (30th) I potted them on into individual pots and put those back under the frame where I plan to leave them until they're big enough to transfer into my raised bed.

I'm completely new to vegetable gardening - so I really hope I've done this right!

All advice gratefully received. :)

Sounds like you're doing fine.  :)  Advice for later on would be to open up your frame as leeks don't need a lot of heat, and to give them some weak liquid feed e.g. tomato food.

Okay, thanks G & R - I'll do that.  :)
