What to follow Onions
« on: July 15, 2016, 09:01 »
Hi,

I have just picked my onions out of a 6 ft x 3 ft bed, what can I follow them with? Is it too late for this season or do I need to plant something for next year?

Thanks

Andy

I have been known to just dig over and let lie until the next growing season.  But I have also dug over, and started some winter crops off.  There are loads of overwintering salads available that I have  had great success from with a bit of cloching in the really cold months.

there's always time to sow a green manure which you can dig in over the autumn months, or sow an overwintering one later on instead.

Ive just filled the space with lettuce I was growing in pots. I'm going to keep the same onion bed next year as had no disease so wanted to put in something innocuous.

and to that lovely list I can add... potatoes!! You can plant quick maturing varieties between now and mid August for new potatoes in the Winter. Available in garden stores and on ebay (watch the p&p charges .. not always included in the quoted price)

Well I am really behind planting stuff out this year so I've just put a pumpkin in the empty onion patch!

bear in mind that the OP is in Northumberland - the season can be shorter than further south and the crop disappointing especially if there's an early frost  :( (then again, we might have another mild autumn ....)
