Do Mallards eat Frogspawn?
« on: March 25, 2016, 14:50 »
We have a wildlife pond in our garden. Over the years, the number of frogs and the amount of frogspawn has decreased from "so much you don't know what to do about it" to "only a couple or three lots". So I decided I needed to protect the frogs from the crows that can be seen flying away with a frog dangling from their beak.

Last year I netted the pond but this was not a success as a hedgehog got itself tangled up and drowned (the only hedgehog I've seen in the garden for the last 10 years).

This year we've go a pair of Mallards swimming on the pond. I doubt that they'll stay but they are frightening off the crows a bit.

So my question is this:

Will the Mallards eat the frogspawn? I assume they won't eat the frogs but if they won't eat the frogspawn either, I'll let them stay.

Yes mallard eat spawn and taddies, i have seen them do both while fishing.

If your pond has a liner they can also damage that climbing out as they have sharp claws.

Mallard are not wildlife pond friendly !
